Insert the tip of the hook through the button hole and grab the base of the button with the tip of the hook.
The buttoning is completed by gently pulling the button out of the hole.
It's an antique-like tool that is rarely seen these days.

These are works by John Holmes of Sheffield from 1902 and 1904.
The pair is made of white mother-of-pearl handles and sterling silver hooks.
It's a cute size like a penknife and can be folded up.
