What Is an Albert Chain?

An Albert chain is a chain used to carry a pocket watch.

It is named after Prince Albert (1819–1861), the husband of Queen Victoria (reigned 1837–1901).
It is said to have become very popular in Britain around the time of Prince Albert's death in 1861.

It developed not only as a practical way to attach a pocket watch to clothing so that it would not be dropped, but also as a stylish accessory for British gentlemen.

How to Wear an Albert Chain

The Basic Way to Wear It with a Waistcoat

The basic way to wear an Albert chain is to pass the part of the chain called the T-bar through the buttonhole of a waistcoat and place the pocket watch, attached to the end of the chain with a clip, into the pocket.

There are several ways to wear it, including a single-chain type, a double-chain type with two chains, and ways to display a small accessory called a fob.

For a classic three-piece suit style, the way shown above is standard.
Even today, some bespoke waistcoats have a special hole for attaching an Albert chain, known as a "chain hole."

In addition to the standard way of wearing it with a classic style, it can also be used in the following ways.

• Using a slightly longer chain from a button near the neck to the chest pocket of a suit
• From a coat button to a coat pocket

Some new Albert chains are designed to be easy to use with casual clothing, with the T-bar part replaced by a spring ring or clip.
I think it is also a good idea to replace only the T-bar part of an antique Albert chain with one of these components.

Recently, it seems that some people use antique Albert chains not for pocket watches, but as wallet chains or necklaces to attach to their wallets.

Single-Chain and Double-Chain Types

In terms of shape, there are mainly single-chain types with one chain and double-chain types with two chains.

Double-chain types were apparently used to carry two pocket watches, or to attach a key for a key-wound watch, a pill case (medicine case), a vesta case (match case), or a magic pencil (small mechanical pencil) to one side.

Materials and Hallmarks

Many antique British ones are made of sterling silver.
Because there is a rule that British sterling silver pieces must have an engraving called a hallmark, the T-bar, clip, and all chain links have hallmarks.

Other materials include gold-filled (gold-plated), solid gold, and, for cheaper ones, nickel alloys.
Unusual materials include resin and even human hair.

The "Fob" That Adds Personality

Albert chains often have a small accessory called a "fob" attached to a shorter chain called a sub-chain.
It can be thought of as something like a "netsuke" for an inro or a "strap" for a mobile phone.

It was not originally attached, and it seems that owners attached whatever they liked.

There are various types, including emblem-shaped ones like commemorative medals, those adorned with natural stones such as amber or lapis lazuli, silver charms, seal-shaped ones for sealing wax, coins, and locket-shaped ones (small photo holders).
