Circa 1894–1895, this is a sterling silver powder jar and swan’s-down puff set crafted by the Baltimore silver firmA. Jacobi & Co..

The matte finish created by fine stippling on the metal base is striking, with flowers and fern leaves rendered in three-dimensional relief through repoussé—working the metal from behind—and intricate chasing from the front, in the traditionalBaltimore repoussé style.The year “1894” is marked on the base of the jar,while the silver handle of the puff is engraved with the year “1895” and the monogram (MAS) of the original owner in elegant hand-engraved lettering.

There is some discoloration on the inside of the jar, minor scratches on the base, and slight age-related staining on part of the down,but it is extremely rare to find an original puff from 130 years ago still paired with its jar.Whether displayed on a dressing table as a work of art or used as a jewelry box for storing precious rings and earrings,it brings a quiet elegance to everyday life.
