A penknife is a small knife used to sharpen the tips of quills and other pens.
It could also be used to sharpen pencils or as a letter opener.

This is a work by Lee & Wigful of Sheffield, England, from 1907.
 It is a foldable pen with a mother-of-pearl handle and a pure silver blade.
The mother-of-pearl handle is beautifully carved.
